Audiological Evaluation with the Buffalo Model
Our diagnostic approach follows the Buffalo Model, a well-established framework for assessing auditory processing abilities. This comprehensive evaluation focuses on four key listening domains:
This involves the ability to accurately and quickly understand sounds, such as breaking down words and interpreting speech clearly. Difficulty in decoding can lead to misunderstandings in communication and reading.
Decoding
This domain relates to how well individuals can tolerate background noise and distractions while listening. It also involves auditory short-term memory, essential for following directions and conversations.
Tolerance Fading Memory
Integration assesses how effectively an individual combines information from both ears to understand sound. Poor integration can result in difficulty with tasks like localizing sounds or multitasking during conversations.
Integration
This domain looks at how individuals sequence and organize auditory information. Challenges in this area can lead to struggles with expressing ideas clearly or organizing thoughts effectively.
Organization
By evaluating these domains, we can pinpoint specific auditory challenges and create targeted treatment plans that improve listening and comprehension.
Auditory Processing Therapy
Our therapy focuses on improving the specific listening areas where individuals are experiencing difficulties. Sessions typically run between 6 to 14 weeks, offering a structured program aimed at enhancing decoding, memory, integration, and auditory organization skills. Each plan is customized to meet the unique needs of the patient, ensuring optimal outcomes.
School Services: Screenings, Therapy and Educator Training
Our clinic partners with schools to offer auditory processing screenings and therapy directly on-site, making it easier for children to receive the care they need. We also offer training for special educators, empowering them with knowledge about APD and how to support students struggling with listening and comprehension in the classroom.
Low Gain Hearing Aids
At The Auditory Processing Clinic, we’re dedicated to providing personalized solutions for individuals with auditory processing disorder (APD). Low-gain hearing aids can play a valuable role in supporting auditory clarity and enhancing listening experiences for certain individuals with APD. These specialized devices amplify sound just enough to improve speech understanding without over-amplifying, making them an ideal option for those who may benefit from a subtle boost in auditory input.
We are pleased to announce that we now offer low-gain hearing aids as part of our comprehensive approach to APD care. If deemed appropriate after a thorough evaluation, these devices can be tailored to meet your unique auditory needs. Contact us today to learn more about whether low-gain hearing aids might be right for you or your child.
Remote Microphone Systems
To help improve listening in noisy environments, we offer remote microphone systems that improve sound clarity and focus for individuals with APD. These devices are especially helpful in classrooms or public settings where listening may be difficult due to noise.
